The Teak Wardrobe Buying Checklist Most People Miss
A custom teak wardrobe is the single most expensive piece of furniture in most Indian master bedrooms — often ₹1.4 to ₹3 lakh for a quality 3-door build, more for walk-ins. It's also the piece where the most goes wrong because it is the most complex: structural panels, hinges, slides, lift mechanisms, internal organisation, interior lighting. This is the 20-point checklist we walk every customer through before signing off a teak wardrobe quote.

Wood — species, grade, origin
Confirm species (Burma teak, Indian teak from Nilambur or CP, or plantation teak), grade (A, B, plantation), and origin in writing on the quote. For a wardrobe, top grade in visible faces and B grade in non-visible structural panels is a smart spec that saves cost without compromising longevity.
Confirm moisture content (8–10% for kiln-dried teak). Wardrobes are particularly sensitive to moisture content because they sit against a wall, often near a bathroom, with limited airflow. Wood that wasn't dried properly will warp inside two monsoons.
Carcass construction — solid wood vs ply
There are two honest approaches to a teak wardrobe carcass. (1) Full solid teak — heavier, more expensive, lasts indefinitely, what we recommend for premium wardrobes. (2) BWR or BWP plywood carcass with solid teak fronts, frames and edges — cheaper, lighter, still long-lasting if the plywood grade is right.
What you do not want: MDF or particleboard carcass with teak veneer. Even with branded hardware, these fail at the screw anchors inside 5–7 years in Indian humidity. Insist on either of the two honest approaches in writing.
Joinery — the silent killer
Wardrobe doors and panels carry weight and swing thousands of times. Hand-fitted mortise-and-tenon joinery, pegged and pressed, holds tight for generations. Dowels and screws loosen within years and produce the wobble that plagues cheap wardrobes.
Ask to see the joinery on a similar wardrobe at the factory before signing. A reputable manufacturer will happily show you. If they show you flat-pack KD hardware instead, that's the answer.
Hinges — brand and load rating
Insist on Hettich, Hafele or Blum hinges, by brand name on the quote. For a teak wardrobe door, 3-D adjustable soft-close hinges with at least 90° opening (preferably 110°) are the modern standard.
Number of hinges matters too: 4 hinges per full-height door (not 3), 3 hinges per chest-height door. Generic hinges save the manufacturer 1–2% of the project cost and ruin the wardrobe within 3–4 years.
Drawer slides and hardware
Full-extension undermount soft-close slides (Hettich Quadro, Blum Tandem, Hafele Grass) are the modern standard. Ball-bearing side-mount slides are acceptable for lighter drawers. Generic plain slides do not belong in a quality wardrobe.
For lift-up shutters (wardrobe top units), insist on hydraulic lift mechanisms by Hettich or Blum. Confirm load rating against shutter weight. Weight rating mismatch is the most common cause of lift failure within the first 18 months.
Internal layout — measure your wardrobe needs first
Before locking the internal layout, measure what actually goes in. Number of long-hang items (sarees, kurtas, suits) — they need 1500–1700mm clearance. Short-hang items — 900–1100mm. Drawer count for folded items, accessories, watches, jewellery. Shoe storage if integrated.
Open shelving for daily-use items vs concealed drawers for occasion items. Tie and belt pull-outs, valet rods, pull-down hanging rails for tall wardrobes. A good designer will spec all of this against your wardrobe of the last decade — not a generic layout.
Mirror — where, how big, framed or frameless
Full-height mirrors on wardrobe doors are practical but reflect the bedroom layout — fine in some rooms, intrusive in others. Inside-door mirrors (mounted on the back of a door) keep the bedroom aesthetic clean and serve the same purpose.
Specify mirror thickness (5–6mm minimum), edge type (polished, framed, or beaded), and backing (silver back is standard; copper-free coating for humid bathroom-adjacent walls).
Interior finish and lighting
Interior finish should be either matching teak (more expensive, looks beautiful) or a lighter melamine or PU finish for better visibility inside. We recommend matching teak for premium wardrobes and a clean white or cream interior finish for high-utility wardrobes.
LED strip lighting inside is a small spend (₹3–6k) and a huge daily-use upgrade. Specify warm white (3000K) for clothing colour accuracy. Specify motion sensor activation so it switches on when you open the door.
Anti-pest and ventilation
Indian wardrobes need active anti-pest measures — naphthalene replacement units, cedar blocks, or vetiver sachets — built into the layout. Specify where these will sit (typically inside drawer corners and at the top of hanging sections).
Ventilation gaps at the top and bottom of the carcass prevent musty smells and reduce humidity-driven warping. A well-spec'd wardrobe accounts for both. Ask to see how the manufacturer handles ventilation in their designs.
Locks and security
Specify lock type per door — biometric, key-only, combination, or cam lock — based on what you actually store. A locker compartment for jewellery and valuables, integrated within the wardrobe, is increasingly standard for premium builds.
Confirm lock brand (Godrej, Hettich, or imported). Confirm whether master keys are provided. Confirm rekeying support if keys are lost.
